The French Atomic Energy Commission, Cadarache site

The French Atomic Energy Commission CEA works particularly in three broad fields: energy, information & healthcare technologies and defence & security. Its actions are founded on excellence in basic research.

Cadarache is one of 9 CEA research centres. Its work focuses particularly on nuclear energy (fission and fusion), new energy technologies and plant biology.

The CEA Cadarache site was founded in 1959, and is now entering an important new phase of its development, with many new construction projects the renovation of existing facilities and decommissioning/clean-up operations.

The following are a selection of the new facilities being built:
  • The RJH (Jules Horowitz Reactor) project: an experimental reactor for research into the behaviour of fuel and materials for nuclear power plants .
  • The RES (Test Reactor) project: a reactor designed to test core components for nuclear propulsion systems .
  • The CEDRA project: a facility designed for the storage of radioactive waste from the CEA's laboratories .
  • The AGATE project: a facility designed for processing liquid radioactive waste produced by the Cadarache facilities .
  • The MAGENTA project: a facility designed for the storage of solid nuclear materials, as required for the CEA's research programmes.







    • RENOVATION PROJECTS

    Several facilities are currently being renovated or due for renovation soon:
  • LEFCA the Advanced Fuel Research and Manufacturing Laboratory .
  • MASURCA research reactor.
  • STAR facility (Processing, Clean-up and Reconditioning Station), which is being redeveloped to include a new laboratory for the study of irradiated fuels.
  • ARCCAD project, a facility for the processing and conditioning of radioactive waste packages.

    There are also a number of decommissioning/clean-up and "waste recovery" projects: Decommissioning/clean-up of the
  • ATUE facility (Enriched Uranium Processing Workshop), decommissioning/clean-up of the
  • RAPSODIE, experimental reactor, decommissioning/clean-up of part of the
  • STEDS facility (Solid Waste and Effluent Processing Station), "waste recovery" in the
  • PEGASE facility, "waste recovery" in facility
  • INB 56 which was used for storing waste before CEDRA was put into service.
