The challenge set by the ITER project is to recreate on earth reactions similar to those that power the very heart of the sun. This international project is unprecedented both in its scale and in the organisational and funding structures set up to run it. The construction phase alone will take ten years. Having started in January 2007, site preparation work is now well underway, overseen by the ITER France Agency.

The main goal at this stage is to clear and level the 35 ha (approx. 85 acre) platform on which the research facility will be built. Over the next ten months, nearly 2.3 million cubic metres of material will be cleared, of which about half will later be reused on site. Non-reusable material (approximately 1.2 million cubic metres) will be stored in a specific area on the ITER site, so as to limit transportation of this rubble on public highways.

Construction of the office buildings for the international ITER Organisation will start in autumn 2008. The Ricciotti-Bonhomme-Trouvin consortium has won the architectural contract, working with Cap Ingelec. The selected architectural design for the buildings complies with the French High Quality Environmental standards.
