As ITER host partner, Europe is funding an approximately 45 % share of the construction costs.
The European Domestic Agency, Fusion for Energy is responsible for collecting funding or contributions in kind from European Union member states and the EURATOM programme. The body is constituted as a "Joint Undertaking", with its head office in Barcelona, Spain.
The European Domestic Agency has a budget of approximately ¤ 4 billion for the first ten years of its operation and will employ around a hundred staff. In particular, it is responsible for constructing the facility buildings and for non-transportable items, such as the office buildings. It will also be involved in manufacturing many of the components, in collaboration with other project partners. In addition, the European Agency is funding three joint projects with the Japanese: the IFMIF facility, designed to study the behaviour of irradiated materials; the computerised calculation and simulation centre; and the remote experiments and modernisation of the Japanese tokamak JT-60.
